Basics of video tagging

Basics of video tagging

In this article, you will learn basics and rules of video tagging in SPAN sports performance analysis platform.

Before you begin

Video tagging is performed with a tag template. To learn how to create and manage such a template, refer to this article.

Coding and tagging rules

  1. Each event should have a primary category associated with it.
  2. Each event can have only one primary category associated with it.
  3. Any labels clicked get attached to the last created event.
  4. A label can only be attached once to an event.
  5. Though an event is created with an end time when a manual primary category button is clicked, such an event's end time can be extended by user by pressing "TAB".
The chart below shows the journey you will take to understand basics of video tagging.

Creating events and tags

  1. Open a video file and then click on the "TAGGER" button positioned in the top-right. Upon clicking, the webpage will switch to a "dark grey" background color. Then, click on the "Create or select a template to start tagging your video" button. Once clicked, a dropdown menu will appear, showcasing a list of options. The first button, "Create new video tagging template" will redirect you to the "Manage Templates" tab upon selection. Below it, you will find the rest of the buttons, each representing an existing tag template within the current organization. Select your desired tag template (e.g. "Football template 2") by clicking on its name.
  2. If you want to change the template, click on the "Tag using a different template" button positioned in the top-left.
  3. After choosing a tag template, the primary category buttons, along with the secondary categories and their corresponding label buttons associated with this tag template, will be displayed on the right side of the screen. To create an event, select a primary category by clicking on a primary category button. The selected primary category will be highlighted in red color.
  4. Click on labels to attach to the last selected primary category. Selected labels will also be highlighted in red color.
  5. The primary category and labels buttons after getting clicked will appear as tags in the ticker on top of the screen. This ticker can be toggled by clicking the "eye" button on left panel.
  6. As you scroll down the page, you will see the timeline view located beneath the video player. Here, events associated with primary categories, secondary categories and their respective labels are displayed. Each row in this timeline corresponds to a unique primary category, secondary category or a label.
  7. The "+5", "+1", "-1" and "-5" buttons, as shown below, are used to increase or decrease the video's playback speed.
  8. Both of the strips shown below can be utilized for navigating through the video.
  9. Click on the button shown below to start or resume video playback.

Editing events and tags

1. To select an event, click on it in the timeline view. A window will then appear, as shown below. Adjust the start and end times of the event using the slider or the "-" and "+" buttons.
2. To delete a label, click on the corresponding button located next to the label, as shown below.
3. When you click on the box indicated below, a dropdown menu will display labels not yet attached to the current event. Add a label to the event by clicking on its name.
4. To remove an entire event, click on the "DELETE EVENT" button shown below.
5. After editing, click on the "CLOSE EVENT EDITOR" button to exit the event editor window. This action will take you back to the primary category and label buttons, allowing you to continue tagging.

WarningNote: Clicking the delete button to the left of the video frame will delete all events and tags.

Filtering events and tags

  1. To filter events, you can select either a single primary category, multiple primary categories, or labels in the timeline view, as shown below. Selecting two primary categories applies an "OR" condition, showing events that match either of the categories. On the other hand, selecting a primary category (or multiple) along with a label (or multiple) applies an "AND" condition, displaying only events that meet both selected criteria as shown below.
  2. The number shown below represents the count of events that matched the applied filter.
  3. To create video clips from these filtered events, click on the button shown below.
  4. When you filter with more than one label, the default setting applies an "AND" condition between the labels, showing events with all selected labels. By clicking the "AND" button between labels, the toggle button, or the "ALL" button in the left panel (all shown below), the "AND" condition switches to "OR". This change means that the filter now shows events matching any of the selected labels, and the "ALL" button will switch to "ANY" button.
  5. Upon clicking the play button of the video, as shown below, the video will only play the filtered video clips that occur after its current point in time.

Notes
Note: BanyanBoard allows any number of primary categories and labels for filtering.

Viewing results of tagging
